D. Van Nimwegen Rites Wednesday At Eagle Grove

Andrew Van Nimwegen received a telephone call Monday advising him of the death that morning of his brother Doras of Eagle Grove at a Des Moines hospital. Funeral services were held at Eagle Grove Wednesday. Surviving are Mrs. Van Nimwegen, nee Ina Brandts, one son and a daughter, and four grandchildren; brothers Andrew of Alton, Gerrit of Rock Valley, Harry of Minneapolis; and a sister, Mrs, Kate Gasink of St. James, Minn. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Van Nimwegen, accompanied by Gerrit Van Nimwegen drove to Eagle Grove to attend the funeral.

Brother of local man dies Monday, Sept. 25
Doras Van Nimwegen (Speck) of Eagle Grove died at the Mercy hospital at Des Moines Monday morning, Sept, 25, following brain surgery He is a brother of Gerrit Van Nimwegen of Rock Valley and is said to have pitched ball for Rock Valley many years ago He is also a brother-in-law of Mrs. Peter Calsbeek, having been married to her sister. He had suffered a stroke recently and was left partially paralyzed.

Doras Edward Van Nimwegen, son of John and Martha Van Nimwegen, was born in Alton, Iowa, on Nov. 27, 1899. He attended grade and high school in the Alton public schools and began to work for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company at the age of eighteen. On November 6, 1924, he was united in marriage to Ina Brandts and to this union a son and a daughter were born, John of Des Moines and Marilyn, now Mrs. Walter Iliff of Marion.

In 1932 this family moved to Eagle Grove where he continued to work for the railroad until 1948 and then took over bookkeeping duties at the W. R. Blake Lumber Company. When the Blake Company was purchased by Green Bay Lumber Company in December of 1956,"Spec" became a part of that organization, and was later named assistant local manager.

Mr. Van Nimwegen died at Mercy hospital in Des Moines on Sept. 25, 1961.

Throughout his life "Spec" was a devoted participant and fan of sports, particularly baseball. He spent many hours fishing and hunting. He was a World War I veteran and was a member of the Masonic Order.

Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother William and a sister Mayme. Surviving are his wife Ina, his son and daughter, six grandchildren, three brothers, Andrew of Alton, Herrit of Rock Valley and Harry of Minneapolis, one sister Catherine of St. James, Minn., several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Kastler Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Hoover in charge. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.
