December 31, 1927 --- February 8, 2013

Eugene (Gene) L. Nelson, age 85, of Belmond passed away Friday February 8, 2013 at Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Funeral Mass for Eugene L. Nelson will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday February 12, 2013 at the St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Rev. Nils Hernandez will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Belmond Cemetery. Miliatary rites will be provided by the Belmond Honor Gaurd outside the church. Visitation for Eugene L. Nelson will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. Monday February 11, 2013 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. A Parish Rosary will be held at 6:45 P.M. and a Scriptural Wake at 7:00 P.M. at the Dugger Funeral Home on Monday. Memorials may be made in Eugene L. Nelson's name to the family.

Eugene Leroy, the son of Oscar and Carrie Shaw Nelson was born December 31, 1927 in Clarion. He grew up in Belmond, where he attended and graduated from Belmond High School in 1946. After high school, Gene joined the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, Gene served and lived at bases around the world. He was an aviation mechanic and worked mostly with the large cargo planes. Most notably, he was serving in Europe during the Berlin Airlift.

Gene was united in marriage to Margarette (Marge) Nedved on May15, 1951 at the St Wenieclaeus [Wenceslaus] Catholic Church in Duncan. Gene and Marge first lived in Texas while he finished his tour with the Air Force. That same year the couple moved back to Belmond to live and raise their family. Gene began working at General Mills in Belmond, but soon began working with his Father at Nelson Sand and Gravel. After his Oscar’s death, the Nelson family owned and operated the Sand and Gravel Business until 1991. Gene retired that same year.

Eugene belonged to the St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond and was a lifetime member of the Belmond Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed golfing and fishing, and Gene loved both watching and reading westerns. Gene is remembered for his love of wood-working and all the time spent in his shop. With either sports or western on the television, Gene would finish the day with a bowl of chocolate ice cream.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Marge, son, Mike and wife, Lisa of Mason City, six granddaughters, Roslind Gustafson and Doug of Harcourt, Riea Scearcy and Earl of Manly, Jessica Tempus and Brandon of Belmond, London Nelson of Waterloo, Kylie Nelson of Belmond, Brittany Hendricks of Evansdale, ten great grandchildren, Zoey, Josie, Zeb, Jade, Zadin, Riley, Kaleb, Brayden, Parker, Carson, daughter-in-law, Denise Krull and Dennis of Belmond, two sisters, Genevieve Turner and Ralph of Belmond, Marilyn Eekhoff of Belmond, sister-in-law, Emma Nelson of Belmond, and numerous other nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Rodney, a sister, Shirley Nicholson, a brother, Robert (Ozzie) Nelson, three brother-in-law,
