Mrs. Jennie Kew, 61, passed away last Thursday after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Community Methodist church. Rev. E.A. Coehell in charge. Burial is being delayed pending arrival of her son Leland, who is serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Navy. The body is resting at Boone Funeral Home until the son, who is now en route, gets home. Interment will be in Belmond cemetery.

Jennie Evelyn Root was born to John and Clara Magden Root on July 30, 1890 on a farm in Wright County, Iowa. She obtained her elementary education in rural school and was a graduate of Belmond High school in 1908. She taught in Wright and Franklin country rural schools for several years then furthered her education with advanced work at the University of Iowa and other colleges. Later she taught in the high schools at Bristow, Fort Dodge, Latimer and Alexander, Iowa. On February 5, 1927, she wed William Kew and they continued to make their home in this community. Three sons were born to the Kews--- Leland (Dorothy), in the Navy; Kermit (Helen), who farms nearby; and Eldon, at home. She is also survived by two brothers, William Root, who made his home with his sister; and Frank Root, near Thornton; and a sister, Mrs. Allie Blankenship of Hampton. Her parents and a brother, Lee, preceded her in death.

Years ago she became a member of the Congregational church, later transferring to the Community Methodist church. While her health permitted, she took an active part in church affairs. Mrs. Kew's life was devoted to service for her family and friends and she will be deeply missed by many who knew and loved her.
