Jane Lois Steenhard, the daughter of John and Lena (Geerdes) Steenhard, was born January 4, 1928, in Lakota, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Lakota High School in 1945, and moved to Fort Dodge to attend Tobin Business College. She worked for the Waltrick Printing Company, an attorney and the Fort Dodge Laboratories. In 1950, Jane married Edwin Reed and the couple had two sons, Brad and Gary Reed. Edwin preceded her in death in 1964. Jane later worked at the Home Federal Savings & Loan and First Federal Savings & Loan in Fort Dodge.

In 1970, Jane married H. Matt Nelson and moved to Goldfield where she helped with his Real Estate business and was employed as a part-time clerk for the Goldfield Post Office, retiring in 1990. Jane was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goldfield, where she was active in the choir, United Methodist Women and other church organizations. She was also a member of Alpha Delphian Club and the Legion Auxiliary in Goldfield. Jane liked to travel with her husband, Matt and spend time wither family and friends.

Jane passed away at the Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the age of 85 years. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John & Lena Steenhard; sister, Elsie Koppen; brothers, Leon, Edwin and Hank Steenhard and husband, H. Matt Nelson in 1994. Survivors include her sons, Brad Reed and wife Debbie and Gary Reed and wife Lori; step-children: Bruce Nelson and wife Barbara, Larry Nelson, Julie Boyher and Kristy Chapman; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous niece, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Goldfield with Pastor Karen Dearchs officiating. Visitation is Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield. Memorials may be made in Jane's name to the Goldfield United Methodist Church.
