Lucille K. Wilkins, age 92 of Waterloo, IA formerly of New Hampton died Friday, November 16, 2012 at Windhaven Assisted Living in Waterloo.

Lucille Kathleen (Wenig) Wilkins was born on April 12, 1920, in Charles City, the daughter of Roy J. and Emma A (Scharping) Wenig. She attended grades K-12 in Charles City and graduated from the Charles City High School in 1938 where she was a member of the National Honor Society. In 1940 she received the Two-Year Upper Elementary Education degree from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, followed by teaching at the Fairview-Consolidated School in Buena Vista County (1940-42) and Nora Springs, Iowa (1942-43). On June 19, 1943, she was united in marriage to Glenn W. Wilkins (of New Hampton) at The Little Brown Church near Nashua, Iowa. Following their marriage they lived in Perrysburg, Ohio, Dumont, Iowa (1943-44) and Greene, Iowa (1944 - 48). They were the parents of two daughters: Marilyn (Mrs. Tom Hughes) of Frankfort, KY, and Louise (Mrs. Robert Krogh) of Waterloo, IA. The family moved to New Hampton in January of 1948 where Glenn was the manager and co-owner with Howard W. David of the Pioneer Fuel Company and Culligan Soft Water.

Lucille received her B.A. degree in Elementary Education in 1966 from the State College of Iowa and M.A. degree as a Reading Specialist in 1971 from the University of Northern Iowa. Lucille was installed in 1965 as a member of the University of Northern Iowa Psi Chapter of Kappa Delta Kappa, an honorary society in education. She taught reading at the New Hampton Junior High School from 1966 – 1983. Lucille was a 1969 charter member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary society for women educators, and a member of the Big Four Unit of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. Lucille was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in New Hampton and served in many areas including Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, president of Women’s Fellowship, deaconess, church ministry committee, and new building and education committees. Lucille was active in community organizations serving in many offices including: president of the New Hampton Federated Women’s Club, president of the Chickasaw County Federated Women’s Club, Girl Scout troop leader, New Hampton Quasquicentennial Celebration, historian for “Project New Horizons”, Carnegie Cultural Center permanent collection committee, and Chickasaw County Genealogical Society.

Lucille’s husband Glenn, passed away April 1, 1994, due to Parkinson’s disease. Lucille married Clarence Hildebrand on August 4, 2000. She moved from New Hampton to Woolstock, Iowa, where her husband Clarence farmed. They enjoyed seven wonderful years together living on the farm. In November of 2007, Lucille moved to Windhaven Assisted Living in Cedar Falls, Iowa due to health concerns. Lucille loved to read and travel and never missed an opportunity to go and experience something new and different. She was a role model on how to live life to its fullest. She was very proud of her family. She was especially happy she was able to walk down the aisles of her four grandsons’ weddings. She is greatly loved and will always be remembered.

She is survived by her husband Clarence, two daughters, Marilyn (Tom) Hughes of Frankfort, KY, Louise (Bob) Krogh of Waterloo, IA; four grandsons, Steven (Elizabeth) Hughes of Louisville, KY, Darrell (Sarah) Hughes of Hermitage, TN, Christian (Jessica) Krogh and great-grandson Connor of Chicago, and Ryan (Jess) Krogh of Cedar Falls, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Glenn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 21 at 11:00 a.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in New Hampton. Interment will be in New Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 am 11:00 am at the church prior to the service on Wednesday, November 21 in New Hampton.
