ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for James "Jim" Zeigler, 76, of Estherville will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at United Methodist Church in Estherville with Pastor Lynn Elrod officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville. He died at his home on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012.
James "Jim" Lee Roy Zeigler was born on April 24, 1936 in Hancock County, Iowa to Elmer and Arlene Zeigler. Jim graduated from Kanawha High School in 1953. He was united in marriage to Joyce Ann Lundy on June 2, 1957 at the Kanawha Lutheran Church.
Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church of Estherville. There, he was a member of the administrative board as well as the pastor/parish relations committee. Jim was past president of Iowa Lakes Community College scholarship committee. Jim served as a director on the Holy Family Hospital board, and on the Estherville Development committee for several years. Jim also served on the board of the Estherville Golf and Country Club. He was a good businessman and most of all had never ending passion for the asphalt industry and the people that work in it. In 1954, Jim went to work for Hancock County Secondary roads department. Here he was first introduced and began his passion with asphalt paving. In 1964 an opportunity arose for him to accept a position for the Iowa's Asphalt Paving Association. This involved moving the family to Carroll, IA to serve as a Field Representative for western Iowa. In 1967 Jim joined forces with Roy Rohlin with a small construction company in northwest Iowa. In the early years Rohlin Construction Company with a handful of employees, work consisted of aggregate treated bases and seal coat projects for county roads system. After 40 years the company grew to over 150 employees with four asphalt plants and 3 aggregate facilities, producing asphalt and aggregates for municipalities, county and state projects. From 2005 - 2006, Jim worked as a consultant for Oldcastle Materials Midwest Group.
Jim served on the board of directors of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa and was past president of the APAI in 1976. He served on numerous national committees associated with the National Asphalt Paving Association, Association of General Contractors and the American Road Builders. In 2011, Jim was inducted into the Iowa Hot Mix Asphalt Hall of Fame in appreciation of his life long commitment to the asphalt industry.
Jim loved his family, friends, and making new friends. In his free time, Jim always enjoyed watching baseball, RVing during the summer months, grilling for friends and family, and watching Iowa State Cyclones football. He enjoyed watching his grandsons Cory, Brad, and Marc play sports and his granddaughter, Madisen, dance. Jim always enjoyed giving them advice when they needed it in their lives. He loved to brag about his Kanawha high school baseball team and his many accomplishments as their catcher and second baseman. For the past seven years, Jim and Joyce wintered at Adobe Wells Park in McAllen, Texas. There Jim enjoyed his friends and meeting new residence each year.
Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce; daughter, Barb (Eric) Paulson of Stanton, Iowa; son, Randy (Abby Hall) Zeigler of Dolliver, Iowa; grandchildren, Cory Hempstead of Wichita, Kansas; Brad (Hope) Hempstead of Carroll, Iowa; Marc (Ellie) Hempstead of West Des Moines, Iowa; Madisen Zeigler of Estherville, Iowa; step-grandchildren, Kelsey Paulson of San Diego, California; Kristin Paulson of San Diego, California; and Luke Paulson of Carroll, Iowa; brothers, Lyle (Dawn) Zeigler of Kanawha, Iowa; Merlin (Marilyn) Zeigler of Gilbert, Iowa; David (Margaret) Zeigler of Clarion, Iowa; sisters, Hazel Wood of Garner, Iowa; Mardell (Gary) Meyer of Belmond, Iowa; and Joan (Charles) Boeck of Denison, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer; mother, Arlene; father-in-law Thomas Lundy; mother-in-law Tillie Lundy; brother, Wayne Zeigler; son-in-law, Monty Hempstead; brother-in-law, Gene Wood; and brother-in-law, Lyle Divan.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or Avera Holy Family Hospital and Hospice.
