Harold D. Nuehring, 89

Harold D. Nuehring, a resident of Little Falls, passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 15, at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls, with the Rev. Gary Hendrickson officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Harold Donald Nuehring was born June 24, 1923, on a farm near Klemme, Iowa, to the late Herman and Caroline ‘Jesse’ Nuehring. He grew up in Hutchins, near Britt, Iowa, where he graduated from the eighth grade and he continued to work on the family farm until he married. Harold was united in marriage to Gerlyn (Gerry) Niemann Jan. 19, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls and then returned to dairy farming in Britt, Iowa. Harold farmed and milked cows in Little Falls, Britt and Forest City, Iowa and spent 13 years in Albert Lea, before settling back in Little Falls. In 1969, Harold left the farm and began working for Clayton Burgardt’s City Sanitary Service and the Burgardt Bus Service until he retired in 1985. Although Harold left the farm, his passion for planting and harvesting remained as demonstrated by the huge garden at his home. Besides gardening, Harold enjoyed woodworking and sharing his crafts with many. And, oh, how he loved a good game of cards. Harold was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church serving as elder, trustee, Sunday school superintendent and teacher for more than 30 years. Following a heart attack and two strokes, Harold spent the last 11 months at St. Otto’s Care Center surrounded by a caring staff who made him feel like family.

Harold is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Gerlyn Nuehring; his children, Shirley (Gary) Schaub of Fairmont, Larry (Sherry) Nuehring of Newton, Kans., Cathy (Jim) Frederickson of Little Falls, Judy (Jim) Larson of Aitkin and Jim (Linda) Nuehring of Little Falls; brother, Ronald (Lorrayne) Nuehring of Little Falls; sisters, Dorothy Burgardt and Mildred Nieman both of Little Falls, Lois (Ken) Elvin of Jefferson, Texas and Janice (Ralph) Swanson of Inver Grove Heights; 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; son, Douglas Nuehring of Swanville; brothers, Arthur Nuehring of Clear Lake, Iowa and Eugene Nuehring of Little Falls. Harold touched many lives and he will be missed. Shelley Funeral Chapels.
