Mabel E. Krantz, age 101, of Salem, SD died Saturday, February 9, 2002, at the Beverly Healthcare Center, Salem.

Mabel J. Matthaei, daughter of Frank D. and Melinda (Tutland) Matthaei was born December 3, 1900 in Wright County, Iowa. She came to South Dakota with her family when she was one year old and they settled near Salem, SD. In February of 1924 she married Harry L. Krantz in Bridgewater, SD. They farmed in the Salem-Canistota area until 1942 when they moved to Bridgewater, SD. Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Salem United Church. Burial will be in the Canistota Cemetery, Canistota, SD.

Survivors include a son, Albert and his wife, Jane, of Rapid City, SD; a granddaughter, Mary Floto and her husband, Doug, of Garden City, Kansas; and a brother, Frank Matthaei and wife Rose of Canistota, SD; three sisters-in-law, Fern Raue of Salem, SD; Opal Dick of Sioux Falls, SD; and Sarah Kuyper of Estelline, SD; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Raymond, four infant children, two sisters, Louse McMackin and Emma Merritt, and four brothers, Lars, Charley, Clifford, and John.
