December 3, 1944 --- November 4, 2012
Indianola, IA -- Services for Gary L. Vickroy, 67, who died Sunday, November 4, 2012, will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 9 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Wallace Cemetery, Wick, IA.
Gary Lee Vickroy was born on December 3, 1944 in Hardy, Iowa, at his grandmother Brayton’s house. He was the son of Merrill and Ruth Vickroy. His grandmother called him Shonney because his mom and dad couldn’t initially agree on a name. Gary married Carol Dale on May 27, 1967 in Omaha, Nebraska. He served in the United States Navy for a period of time. Gary worked many jobs, but his last was for the Indianola Street Department where he began working in May of 1969 and retired May 31, 2001, after completing 32 years of service. Upon retiring he said, “It is going to be fun not getting up in the middle of the night to plow snow!!”
Gary loved the outdoors. He fished with his brothers, Uncle Jim and friends. He loved taking his wife, daughters, and grandkids fishing, but he seldom got a chance to fish because he was always putting bait on someone else’s hook or somebody would get their line caught on something or someone. Gary enjoyed target practice and belonged to the Isaak Walton Club. Once a week he would go and trap shoot. He won many trophies and loved the sport. Gary liked to go camping and vacations were in Branson, Missouri. One memorable time at Branson, Carol and the girls went for a walk and when they came back, Gary was lying in a lawn chair with a skunk underneath the chair. Carol and the girls whispered, “Dad, don’t move, skunk!”
Gary also had a love for animals. His dog “Tippy” was his pal. She knew who to go to for a treat and who she could wake up in the middle of the night in order to go outside. When Gary walked outside she was always at his side and knew his voice and would come to him. Gary attended the Indianola Regular Baptist Church and accepted the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior.
Gary loved his wife Carol, each and every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His wish for them was to do well, keep out of trouble and to be happy. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Roberta “Robbie” Vickroy Hicks; parents, Merrill and Ruth Vickroy; four sisters; and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Rhonda Gottbehuet of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Rachel and Shelby Schultze of New Virginia, Jacob Hicks of Des Moines, Dustin Gottbehuet of Des Moines, and Mark, Rhieanna and Tessa Gottbehuet of Indianola; seven great-grandchildren, Ashton, Peyton, Hope, Leah, Blake, Corbin and Isaiah; sister, Janet Martin of Des Moines; and brothers, Keith Vickroy of Roan Oaks, Virginia, Jim Vickroy of New Virginia and Tom Vickroy of Winterset.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 8 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given the family in his name.
