Vernon Lloyd Johansen, 87, of Carroll died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 at Regency Park in Carroll. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Pastor Rick Hamilton officiating. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Dodge. Organist for the service will be Nancy Davis, and soloist will be Dawn Eimers. Casket bearers will be Matthew Eimers, Michael Johansen, David Johansen, Eric Johansen, Nathan Johansen and David Kasperbauer. Honorary casket bearers will be the Gideons.

Born May 24, 1925, at Salina, Kan., he was a son of Roy Henry and Mable Marie (Mog) Johansen. Vernon grew up in Kansas and graduated from Kanopolis High School in 1943. He worked in the salt mine in Kansas and in a ship yard in California. He was then a fireman on a drilling rig from 1950 to 1962 in Kansas, Oklahoma, North Dakota and Iowa. He married Joy Ann Buckingham on Nov. 3, 1962 at United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove.

Vernon came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior in May 1973. Following their marriage Vernon worked construction, and from 1968 to 1980 they owned and operated the Eagle Hotel in Eagle Grove. From 1972 to 1990 he owned and operated the Vern Johansen Construction Co. He was a member of United Methodist Church while living in Eagle Grove where he was a youth fellowship leader and was a lay speaker. Vernon retired in 1990. His hobbies included woodworking, remodeling old houses, and taking care of his rental properties. He enjoyed watching sporting events especially college basketball and major league baseball. His favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals. Vernon was active in Gideons and held several offices over the years.

Vernon is survived by two daughters: Debra Kasperbauer and her husband David of Manning and Diane Johansen of Carroll; two sons: Dennis Johansen and his wife Lola of LeMars and Douglas Johansen and his wife Sharon of Fort Dodge; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joy Ann in 1999; two sisters: Norma Jean Casarona and LaFaye Marie Svoboda; and a brother Leland Johansen.
