BELMOND - John Halfwassen, 93, of Belmond, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Memorial services for John Halfwassen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Immanuel Reformed Church, east of Belmond. Pastor David DeKuiper will officiate. Burial will take place in the Immanuel Reformed Church cemetery at a later date. The University of Iowa College of Medicine acknowledges with grateful appreciation the generous contribution John Halfwassen has made to the advancement of medical science and the welfare of mankind. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers the family wishes memorials be made to the Belmond Lion's Club in John Halfwassen's name. Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S., Belmond, is in charge of arrangements.

John was born on Aug. 16, 1919, to Martin and Agnes Kruse Halfwassen on a farm southwest of Meservey. He attended a rural school for eight years and graduated from Meservey High School in 1937. John married Loraine Tinkey on July 8, 1941. John and Loraine were engaged in dairy farming northeast of Alexander until they retired and moved to Belmond in 1983. They spent 17 winters in Florida. John was a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church where he served as an elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher. Over the years he was involved in many activities, which included being a board member of Franklin County R.E.C., and Thornton Co-op Creamery, Chairman of Wisner Township, Farm Bureau, member of Belmond Lion's Club from which he received the Melvin Jones and Warren Coleman awards for his service. He was a volunteer driver for the Belmond Care Car and delivered Meals on Wheels.

John is survived by his wife, Loraine, sons, Colin (spouse, Caryl Anne) of Naples, Fla., Darwin (spouse, Vicki) of Des Moines; grandchildren, Joel of Phoenix, Ariz., Brent of Milwaukee, Wis., and Anita Unger, of Des Moines; great-grandson, Colin of Phoenix, Ariz.; numerous relatives and friends. His parents, a son, daughter, grandson and two sisters and his brother precede him in death. Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luicks Lane S., Belmond, IA.
