Shirley Jean Bauer, 78 of Ottumwa, Iowa died October 2, 2012 of heart failure at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa following a short illness.

Shirley Jean Sandmaier was born May 17, 1934 at Clarion, Iowa to Joseph and Jean Cressey Sandmaier. Shirley married Russell on January 1, 1954 in Clarion, Iowa. From this marriage five children were born, Carol Sells (Joe)of Aurora, IL, Jeff Bauer of Wyoming, IA, Brian Bauer of Iowa City, IA, Karen Berg (Rollie) of Madrid, IA, Jim Bauer(Melissa)of Albia, IA, 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Shirley worked as a Quality Control Supervisor for Colomaster for 35 years. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was very active in her Church and enjoyed music played several instruments and was involved with Sweet Adeline's vocal group. She also enjoyed outdoor activities including camping and bicycling. She loved reading and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Russell, their children and siblings Bill (Joan) Sandmaier, Bob (Kathy) Sandmaier, Jerry Sandmaier, Joyce Sandmaier and Mary Jo (Randy) Hutchings. Her body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 11 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ottumwa, IA officiated by Rev. Ron Barnett. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shirley's name. She will be missed by all. Reece Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
