Larry Joe Beckendorf, the son of Bobby Joe and Beverly Ann Zimmerman Beckendorf was born Sept. 1, 1955 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, and died Sept. 25, 2012 at his home in Exira at the age of 57 years and 24 days. Larry was baptized at the Methodist Church in Lewis, and confirmed at the Oakland Methodist Church in Oakland. He attended the Oakland Community Schools through the eighth grade and then transferred to the Walnut Community Schools in Walnut, where he graduated with the High School Class of 1973. Larry attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, graduating in 1977 with degrees in Science and German. After college he taught school for a year at the Eagle Grove Community Schools in Eagle Grove, then in 1979, he was employed as a teller for First Whitney Bank in Atlantic.

On Aug, 11, 1979, he was united in marriage to Jane Anne Buckendahl at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Three children: Christian, Jennifer and Trevor were born to this union. In 1984, they moved to Exira. Larry was employed at the Exchange State Bank as the head cashier then later became the Vice President. He also was an Insurance Agent for the bank for many years. Larry was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Exira where he was the organist and served on the finance committee. He was a member of the Exodus Lodge #342, A.F & A.M. in Exira. He served on the Region XII Housing Board in Carroll, Iowa and served on the Audubon County Endowment Board. Larry enjoyed cooking and grilling. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his father-in-law Edwin Buckendahl and his sister-in-law Vernie Buckendahl. Survivors include his wife Jane Beckendorf of Exira; his children: Christian and wife Alicia Beckendorf of Grimes; Jennifer and husband Travis Brabham of Exira; Trevor Beckendorf of Templeton; his grandchildren: Camden Beckendorf of Grimes; Cole Brabham and Brooklyn Brabham both of Exira; Taylor Beckendorf and Kori Beckendorf both of Manning; his parents Bobby and Beverly Beckendorf of Walnut; his brothers and sister: Russell and wife Carla Beckendorf of Milford; Sherri and husband Chuck Hetrick of Maryville, Mo.; Mark Beckendorf of Johnston; his mother-in-law Vera Buckendahl of Alta; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Eddie and wife Carol Buckendahl of Enumclaw, Wash.; Jerry Buckendahl of Alta; Jim and wife Melody Buckendahl of Alta; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, Oct. 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Audubon. Father Emmanuel Aguwoke and Father Wayne Gubbels officiating. Interment will be in the Exira Cemetery in Exira. Casket Bearers will be his nephews: Corey Beckendorf, David Buckendahl, Dale Buckendahl, Dan Buckendahl, Doug Buckendahl, Ryan Buckendahl, Tyler Buckendahl, and Jared Buckendahl. The family will meet with friends on Sunday afternoon from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.
