Pioneer Resident Dies Thursday

Jack Matheson, 71, long-time resident of Goldfield, passed away at his home early Thursday morning. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the home with Rev. Clayton Kent of Kimball, Minn., in charge of the services. Richard McCutcheon was soloist.

John Albert Matheson, son of John and Mary Matheson, was born July 25, 1880, at Underwood, Ontario, Canada. He moved to Goldfield in 1882, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was married May 1, 1901, to Lizzie Reid of Goldfield. To this union was born five children: Ione, Mrs. Clinton Woodward of Spencer; Orlan of Encinitas, Calif; Fyrma, Mrs. Lyle Westrum of Roswell, N. M.; Maxine, Mrs. Levant Loyd of Goldfield; and Paulyne, Mrs. Stanley Machacek of Cedar Rapids. Mr. and Mrs. Matheson enjoyed a long married life together, celebrating their golden anniversary May 1, 1951. Mr. Matheson operated a blacksmith shop in Goldfield for 50 years beginning in 1896 with his father and retiring in 1947. He passed away Oct. 18, 1951 after a prolonged illness at the age of 71 years, 2 months and 23 days. He is survived by his wife and children, two brothers and three sisters, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a baptized believer and a member of the Park Church of Christ in Goldfield.
