May 6, 1919 --- July 8, 2012

Phyllis Marcellyn Curtis, age 93, of The Lighthouse in Waconia, Minn., quietly passed from this life on July 8, 2012. She was born in Clarion, Iowa, May 6, 1919, to parents William and Daisy Bell Moon and was the eldest of the three "Moon Sisters." Phyllis grew up in Greene, Iowa, graduated from Greene High School in 1936, and later that summer was crowned the first "Miss Butler County, Iowa." While attending Iowa State Teacher's College (UNI) for pre-nursing, she was elected "Mardi Gras Campus Queen." Later she transferred to Rochester, Minn., to Kahler School of Nursing where she received her degree with honors.

She was married on March 29, 1942 in Carson City, Nev., to her sweetheart and best friend Robert Curtis, also of Greene. Their history began when they were back yard neighbors and playmates. After serving several years at the United States Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Ill., and Mason City, Iowa, the couple moved back to their hometown where they continued their married life for nearly 58 years. During this marriage two daughters were born, Saundra Lee (Sandy) and Marcellyn Dee (Marcie).

Music played a large role her life. She was an accomplished pianist, organist, and composer, and loved playing the ukulele and singing. She accompanied high school musicians at contests, and gave tap dance lessons. She loved the outdoors, playing husband-wife golf tournaments, hunting morel mushrooms, and was a crack shot with her .22 rifle. Phyllis excelled in her kitchen and will be remembered for her delicious apple pies and Thanksgiving dinners. She loved her family dearly and was devoted to her faith.

Phyllis is survived her daughter Sandy, of Chanhassen, Minn., and three grandchildren, Kristen Hesalroad of Chanhassen, Kimberlyn Jones (Matt) of Houston, Texas, Jamie Clogg of Whitefish, Mont., son-in-law Steve Clogg of Whitefish, sister-in-law Margaret Angarola of Fox Lake, Ill., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her parents, two sisters, husband and one daughter. She leaves many friends in Iowa, Montana and Minnesota. A Celebration of Life will be held later this month at the Lighthouse in Waconia. Burial beside her husband in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, is pending. You may contact her family through Sandy Curtis at 1035 Pontiac Lane, Chanhassen, MN 55317.
