May 20, 1920 --- May 14, 2012

Alice "Peggy" Davenport Carlson, of Duluth passed peacefully with her family by her side into the arms of her Lord from Solvay Hospice House on May 14, 2012 – one week short of her 92nd birthday.

Born in Duluth on May 20, 1920 to Ernest and Eithel (Bartlett) Davenport, she was raised in Oskaloosa, Kan., home of her maternal grandparents and also Belmond, Iowa home of her paternal grandparents. When Peggy was 14 she took a bus from Kansas to Duluth where she lived with her dear aunt and uncle, Edna and Bill Kiefer. She graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1938. In January of 1942 she married the love of her life, Edward G. Carlson, who was sent by the Army two weeks later to work as a scientist in Los Alamos, N.M., on the Manhattan Project. Peggy was an extraordinary woman who lived and loved through a fantastic period of time. She loved music, from the Swing Bands when she was young, to the Beatles to Corinne Bailey Rae recently, enjoyed singing with family and friends, and was especially wonderful at harmonizing. She was a lover of "all creatures great and small," a friend to people of all ages throughout her life, but she will be most lovingly remembered for her devotion as a wife, mother and homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her husband in 1973, parents, brother Bartlett, and dear friend Ken Hultquist. Beloved mother of Bart (Karen), Bruce, Kristi (Phil) Johnson, Philip (Gina), Tobin (Suzey Ellingson), Barb (Jim Freeman), Nancy (Jeff) Solem. Grandmother of Jennifer (Kevin) Nolan, Corey, Casey and Brady Carlson, Blake, Grant and Bryn Johnson, Duncan, Noah and Perri Carlson, Vanessa (Joe Blaney) Pearson, Abigail Solem, great-grandson Wyatt Carlson, sister-in-law June Mattke and family and daughter-in-law Tracy Carlson Quade. She also leaves her devoted Australian Shepherd – Cup.

VISITATION: 11 a.m. Wednesday May 16, until the 1 p.m. service in Dougherty Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Solvay Hospice House, 801 Baylis St., Duluth, MN 55811 or Animal Allies Humane Society of Duluth.
