Hazel Marie Conger

West Des Moines, IA -- Hazel Conger, 89, passed away Monday, April 9, 2012 at Kennybrook Village in Grimes. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at McLaren's Chapel with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Hazel was born and raised in Dows, Iowa and came to West Des Moines in 1955. She was secretary/treasurer for the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce for over 20 years. In 1983 she received a special recognition award and a key to the city of West Des Moines. She was a longtime member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of W.P.C.I. and the West Des Moines Women's Club. Hazel was instrumental in the creation of the Polk County Crime Stoppers program and the Valley Arts Festival.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie (Steve) Doherty of Redmond, WA; two sons, Raulie (Diane) Conger of Brownsburg, IN and John (Mary) Conger of West Des Moines; grandson, Todd (Jennifer) Doherty; two great-granddaughters, Lindsey and Anna Doherty; step-granddaughter, Davina Hensley and her son, Kolton; three sisters, Ruby Cook, Avonne Brown and Ladene (Dick) Raspotnik; and two brothers, Larry and Caryl (Carol) Carstens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orval.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at McLaren's Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to the Animal Lifeline of Iowa, Inc. or H.C.I. Services. A special thanks to Kennybrook Village and H.C.I. Services for the care and compassion they provided to Hazel and her family.
