BELMOND - Lauralee L. Schmid, 59, of Belmond, passed away Friday, April 13, 2012, at the Belmond Medical Center. Memorial services for Lauralee L. Schmid will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday April 19, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. Pastor Bill Kem of the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion will officiate. Visitation for Lauralee will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday April 18, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Cancer Society in Lauralee's name.
Lauralee Louise, the daughter of North and Laura Higgins Cheney, was born July 23, 1952, in Springfield, Ill. Lauralee grew up in Petersburg, Ill., where she attended school. She graduated from Porta High School in Petersburg in 1970. Lauralee then attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. It was there that she began her life's calling of being a teacher. After receiving her Bachelor's Degree from EIU, Lauralee began her teaching career in Gardner, Ill. Lauralee was united in marriage to Heinz Schmid on July 26, 1981, in Morris, Ill. The couple made their home in Morris and later raised their family in Loda, Ill. In December 1996, they moved to Belmond. Lauralee continued her teaching career at the Belmond-Klemme Community School. Lauralee was a natural-born teacher and was well-liked and respected. Sharing knowledge and devoting time to her students was in her blood. When not in school, Lauralee enjoyed traveling extensively with Heinz. The couple made trips as far as Brazil and the Caribbean. She enjoyed Cirque de Soleil and had been to many productions. Gardening and taking care of her flowers and lawn were a passion of Lauralee's. She spent many hours choosing the perfect set-up for her gorgeous garden. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion and had a full-time schedule helping at her church. She liked singing in the choir. Lauralee was a devoted citizen of the Belmond community. Her active membership in the Culture Club, Beta Sigma Phi, and many other committees and fund raisers is the proof of her dedication. Other hobbies included bird-watching for orioles and hummingbirds in the backyard, reading, criticizing style choices on "Project Runway", and spending any time she could get with her three granddaughters. They were the light of her life.
Lauralee is survived by her husband, Heinz, children Stefanie (Adam) Brunner of Plymouth, Barrett (Marina) Schmid of Lake Carroll, Ill., step-daughter Christy (John) Faulk of Atlanta, Ga., three grandchildren, Kassidy Brunner and Alicia and Wren Schmid, three brothers, North (Franci) Cheney and Larry (Kay) Cheney, both of Springfield, Ill., and David (Wendy) Cheney of Brazil, nieces, nephews, and numerous other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Beverlee. Dugger Funeral Homes, Belmond, Iowa.
