Louis Paul Kramer, age 90, of Sauk Rapids, formerly of Dassel, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids.

He was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Belmond, IA, the son of Louie and Helen (Frohling) Kramer. Louis grew up in the Belmond area, where he attended school, and was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. Louis was inducted into the US Army Oct. 23, 1942, and served his country during World War II. He was discharged June 24, 1944. On Sept. 24, 1944, Louis was married to Vernadine Johnson in Iowa. The couple made their home on the family farm near Alexander, IA, where they farmed for 19 years before moving to Clear Lake, IA, and then to Eagle Grove, IA. Louis was a machinist in Davenport, IA for several years and, in 1969, they moved to the Dassel area, where they purchased and operated a resort on Big Swan Lake for 35 years. Louis also worked at Reinke’s in Litchfield. In the last years, he had made his home in Darwin, Browerville, Clarissa, Grand Rapids, and recently at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids.

Louis enjoyed spending time fishing on Big Swan Lake, and growing the biggest vegetables that he could. He loved nature, cats, and watching birds. He also enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Louis will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Vernadine Kramer of Grand Rapids; children, Lou Alan Kramer of Hector, Greg (Deb) Kramer of Sauk Rapids, and Debra (Kim) Isaacson of Remer; six grandchildren, Katherine Cook, Heather (Jeff) Wachal, James Kramer, Jacob Kramer, Matt Kramer, and Steven Kramer (and friend Merideth Black); six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Kopenhagen of Vacaville, CA. Louis was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Raymond, Gordon, and Robert.

A memorial service took place Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. at the Lamson Free Church in Dassel, with a time to gather with the family one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors were provided by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard. Memorial arrangements were handled by the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel.
