Irvin Leslie Meyers, 82, of Lakefield, passed away on March 6, 2012 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. A memorial service for Irv will take place on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist in Lakefield with Pastor Kathy Brandt officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Okabena American Legion. Burial will take place at a later date.
Irv was born on January 22, 1930 in Mountain Lake, the youngest son of Ernest Winfield and Jankin (Loof) Meyers. He passed away on March 6, 2012 at Sioux Falls Veterans Memorial Hospital after a long illness of COPD. He fought the good fight. Irv grew up in Mountain Lake. As a young man he had many jobs. He helped his older brothers farm. He worked for Archer Daniels Midland Flax Straw Division; where he met the love of his life, Maybin Evelyn Seagran, before being drafted into the Army. He served in the Korean Conflict overseas in Paris, France until his discharge in 1953. On October 16th 1953 he was united in marriage to Maybin. Following their marriage they lived in Mountain Lake, several cities on the east coast, Livermore and Goldfield, Iowa, finally settling in Okabena, where they lived for 31 years. In 1994 Irv and Maybin moved to Lakefield.
Irv worked for Vernon Behrens of Okabena, managed the liquor store, and owned and operated his own milk hauling operation. He worked at the Okabena Elevator for 24 years. He worked for Don Koster at Jackson Millworks in Spirit Lake, Iowa in 2002. Many people will remember Irv for his homemade fun toy trinkets. He was a 52-year member of the Okabena American Legion where for many years he set off fireworks. Irv liked working in the garden if Maybin was there to tell him what to do. He also liked delivering meals on wheels the last couple of years.
Irvin is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Maybin of Lakefield, his beloved children, Randy of Lakefield, Josette (Darrell) Pohlman of Fort Mohave, AZ, and Michael of Minneapolis. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Bobby Jo Pohlman (Erin Kennedy), Aimie (Danny) Montez, Jamie Pohlman (Danny Henneger), Matthew Pohlman, Jessica Vortherms, Kylee Ann Meyers (Charlie Koutek) and Sarah Meyers (Matt Janssen); and six great-grandchildren Dylan Montez, Peyton Montez, Lincoln Henneger, Brooke Henneger, Brandon Henneger and Bella Koutek. Irv is also survived by his siblings Roy Meyers of Fountain, CO, Lester Meyers of Billings, MO, Ethel Meyers of Rockford, IL, two sisters-in-law Darlene Meyers of Mountain Lake and Virginia Karschnik of Mountain Lake, and three brother in laws, Charles (Shirley) Seagren of Webster City, Iowa, Wayne (Rindy) Seagren of Marion, Iowa, and David (Linda) Seagren of Marysville, Kansas and several special nieces and nephews. Irvin is preceded in death by his parents, son Patrick Irvin, his siblings, Louie, Clarence, Donald, infant sister Gladys, son-in-law Loran Meyers, two sisters-in-law, Thelma and Geraldine, and special nephew DeLyle Fast.
