Rites For Mrs. John Van Nimwegen Here Saturday

Funeral services were held at the local Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon for Mrs. John Van Nimwegen (nee Martha Sorgdrager), long-time resident of Alton, who passed on Thursday, July 26th. For the past few years in declining health, she had made her home in Eagle Grove with her son Doras and family. She was born at Eldora, Iowa on Dec. 2nd, 1866 and was 78 years, 8 months old at the time of her passing. She spent her childhood at Ackley, Iowa and on July 27, 1884 was married to John Van Nimwegen of Alton. Mr. Van Nimwegen preceded his wife in death about twenty years ago. She is survived by her seven children: Mrs. Mayme Abar, Oxcoro, Minn.; Andrew of Alton, Iowa; William of Los Angeles; Kathryn Gasink [Gesink], St. James, Minn.; Gerrit, Rock Valley and Dora of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Harry of Minneapolis; by ten grand-children and seven great grandchildren, by two brothers, Cornelius and Doras Sorgdrager of Alton and by one sister, Miss Mary Sorgdrager. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Van Nimwegen was a charter member of the Presbyterian Aid Society and of the local American Legion Auxiliary and was long a faithful member of both organizations. She was a devoted mother, a kind neighbor and was loved and respected by a host of friends. Rev. Henry Eggink officiated at the services Saturday and Miss Virginia Cambier sang a solo. Interment was in the local Nassau township cemetery. All her children, except Will of Los Angeles, were present at the services, also some of her grandchildren and two great grandsons, Darrel and Bob Daske of Sioux City, whose mother (the former Esther Emery) died some years ago. The boys were here with their foster father, George Henderson of Sioux City. Malcolm Weber of Cedar Rapids, often a guest in Mrs. Van Nimwegen's home in years past, was here for the services; also a number of relatives and friends from neighboring towns.
