DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT

Mrs. Joseph Holman Passed Away in Long Beach, Calif., Jan. 19th

Mrs. Joseph Holman, early day Hawarden resident and well known to many of the older citizens here, passed away Jan. 19th at her home at Long Beach, Calif. The Holman family lived in Hawarden for a period of eight or ten years in the late 80's and early 90's during which time Mr. Holman was employed as an engineer for the North Western Railway Company, moving from here to Eagle Grove where Mr. and Mrs. Holman continued to reside until three or four years ago when Mr. Holman was placed on the pension roll. They have since resided in California.

Eagle Grove Eagle carried the following mention of Mrs. Holman's death:
Mrs. Joseph Holman, 65, passed away while sleeping Tuesday morning, Jan. 19, at her home in Long Beach, Calif. On Mr. Holman's being retired from railroad service about four years ago, they moved to Long Beach, Calif., where they have since resided. Prior to that time, they had made their home in Eagle Grove for over thirty years. Mrs. Holman was very prominent in church, club and social work in Eagle Grove over a long period of years, serving as president of two women's clubs and was active in many other community welfare organizations. She was particularly active and useful in assisting people from across the seas in preparing themselves to become American citizens. Many a naturalized citizen in this community owes entire credit for becoming a citizen to the painstaking, patient instruction and teaching of Mrs. Joseph Holman. She was also district committeeman for women's clubs in the third district and held other positions of honor and trust.

Mrs. Holman was born in Glasgow, Scotland, March 26, 1867. She was united in marriage with Joseph W. Holman June 3, 1884. To this union six children were born, four having preceded their mother to the great beyond. The two surviving children are Mrs. Paul Braden of Pekin, Ill., and Mrs. W. R. Baker of Eagle Grove, Iowa. Burial will take place in accordance with her wishes at Long Beach.
