Maynard J. Meyer, age 81, of Dows, died on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at the Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, February 13, at the United Methodist Church in Dows. Pastor Linda Bibb will officiate. Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Visitation will be held from 4–6:00 p.m., on Sunday, February 12, at the Dugger Funeral Home in Dows and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
Maynard Junior, the son of Amelia Yakel was born on April 7, 1930 in Alexander. He grew up in the Alexander and Dows areas where he attended country schools. Maynard graduated from the Dows High School in 1948. Maynard was united in marriage on April 25, 1951, to Marcella Martin at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home north of Dows, where Maynard worked for George DeSotel on a dairy farm. In 1953, Maynard and Marcella began farming and moved to their own farm. It was on this farm Maynard and Marcella raised their three children, Geary, DeAnna and Tracy. Maynard built a very successful and well-known, Purebred Holstein dairy operation. Maynard’s cattle won nationwide recognition. He also grain farmed. Maynard was a gifted carpenter and built his family's home.
Maynard enjoyed bowling and playing golf. Maynard retired from the dairy business in 1987 and grain farmed up until 2007. He entered the Southfield Wellness Community in 2007. Maynard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dows, where he held many offices, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. Maynard served the REC Board, Farmer Mutual Board and was a 4-H Leader.
Maynard is survived by his wife, Marcella; three children, Geary and wife, Denice of Webster City; DeAnna and husband, Dr. Charlie Caughlan of West Des Moines and Tracy and husband, Erick Schminke of Madrid; five grandchildren, Careen (Derek), Kathryn (Dana), Thomas (Laurie), Angela (Scott) and Matthew; and 8 great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Eleanor, Samuel, Nora, Sean, Scarlett, Logan and Alexis. He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Amelia and Raymond Meyer.
