Irene Lucille Hackbarth, age 98, of Iowa Falls, and formerly of Dows, died at Heritage Care Center on Thursday, February 9, 2012. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with burial in the Northlawn Memory Gardens, rural Iowa Falls. Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. Monday at the Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls.

Irene was born on June 28, 1913 in rural Alden, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Sylvia (Coy) Langesen. Irene went to school at Oakland Valley District 8, graduated from Popejoy High School, and the State Teachers College now known as UNI in Cedar Falls. She had taught 3 years country school (Sunny Corner) at Oakland No. 9 for $50 a month, taught 3 years at Popejoy Junior High School, and taught 1 year at Alexander Junior High. Irene was united in marriage to Dale Hackbarth on December 20, 1941 in Kansas City, MO. She was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church in Dows, Morgan UMW, the Morgan Study Club, Franklin Co. Conservation Board member, Franklin Co. Extension Council Member, Franklin Co. 4-H Council member, 4-H Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Irene is survived by her daughter, Sandy Harris and her husband, Bruce of Iowa Falls; a son, Kevin Hackbarth of Muncie, IN; a grandson, Shane Harris and his wife, Laurie of Altoona; a granddaughter, Shelby Phippen and her husband, Chuck of Exira; and two great-grandsons, Spencer Harris and Lucas Harris of Altoona. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale; a brother, Glen Langesen; and a sister, Velma Mae.
