Verlyn Ray Meyer was born on March 12, 1941, the son of Herman and Minnie (Auen) Meyer in Lake View, IA. He was baptized as an infant at the Presbyterian Church in Carnarvon, Iowa. At the age of four he moved with his parents to a farm south of Early. He attended Early Consolidated School, graduating as valedictorian of the class of 1958. He attended Buena Vista College, graduating in 1964. While attending college, he worked in Early for Harold Vining and later for Cecil Boeckman making loading chutes and doing welding repairs. Some of those chutes are still in the area.

On June 25, 1963, Verlyn married the love of his life, Betty Louise Watson, at her parents' home in Ida Grove. They were blessed with three children: Jerry, Jim, and Scott. After graduating from college, he taught in Fonda and then in Eagle Grove, Iowa. While teaching in Eagle Grove he attended school in the summers and obtained his masters degree. In the 1970's, he decided to make a career change and went to work as district representative for a crop insurance company. He worked for Dornberger-Berry, the Hartford, and at the present time for Agri-Business in Schaller, Iowa. He really enjoyed calling on his agents and made many new friends over the years. Verlyn was an avid sports fan, watching on both television and sitting in the stadium watching the Hawkeyes play. Watching the grandchildren play football, softball, soccer, and basketball was a real joy for him. The family enjoyed several trips together in the last few years – going to Colorado, Oregon and Pennsylvania. These will always be treasured memories. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Odebolt.
