Verna Belle Carothers was born on October 29, 1909 at Garner, Hancock, Iowa to James Dale Carothers and Dilla Mae Quintas, the first of three children. She had a younger sister, Verna and younger brother, James Dale Jr.

Family found in the 1910, 1915, 1920, 1925 & 1930 censuses living on her father's farm at rural Garner, Hancock, IA:

1910: James Carothers 31, Dilla Carothers 21, Verna Carothers 5/12.

1915: Verner Carothers age 5.

1920: James Carothers 41, Dilla Carothers 31, Verna Carothers 10, Velva Carothers 7, Charles Carothers 3[3 10/12].

1925: James Carother 46, Dilla Carothers 36, Verna Carothers 14, Velva Carthers 11, Charles Carothers 8.

1930: James Corothers 51, Dilla Corothers 41, Verna Corothers 20, Velma Corothers 17, Charles Corothers 14 .

Verna Belle was also counted in the 1930 census at Mason City, Cerro Gordo, IA living as a boarder at St Joseph's Mercy Hospital, working as a student nurse. Age 20.

After graduating from high school at Garner, IA, Verna moved to Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa to enroll at Mercy College. She graduated from Mercy in 1931 with a nursing degree.

Verna married Claude Herman Veeder on February 12, 1935 at the Zion Reformed Church, Garner, IA. Her sister Velva served as maid of honor.

Verna and Claude had a daughter, Nancy Louise Veeder who was either stillborn or died as an infant in 1936.

Verna Veeder died April 1972 at Belmond, Wright, IA and is buried at the Belmond Cemetery there beside her husband Claude and daughter Nancy.
