Joyce Duea, 63, of Ames, died Sunday of cancer at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, with the Rev. Glenn Kappelmann officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery. Joyce was born March 27, 1939, in Webster City, the daughter of Grover and Melba (Tucker) Arends. She was a graduate of Williams High School. She attended the University of Northern Iowa. She married James Duea Aug. 19, 1960, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williams. She lived in Humboldt from 1960 to 1971. She taught in elementary schools in Kanawha and Humboldt. She taught Head Start in Humboldt, and later served as a teaching assistant at Roosevelt Elementary School in Ames for 25 years. She retired in 2001. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, Bethesda Lutheran Church Women, Mary Greeley Auxiliary, and Order of the Eastern Star, Aurora Chapter, Fort Dodge. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed family activities. She loved flowers and music. Joyce had been a resident of Ames since 1971.

Joyce is survived by her husband; one daughter, Joelle Vertanen and husband, Bruce, of Ames; one son, Jim Duea and wife, Christina, of Clive; three grandchildren, Ben Duea of Clive, and Kelsie and Samuel Vertanen of Ames; two sisters, twin sister Jo Schroeder and husband, Mel, of Fort Dodge and Kathleen Artes and husband, Bob, of Britt; and several nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Eva Jean Stephenson; and one brother, Sherman Arends. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. Memorials may be directed to the family. Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of arrangements.
