RENWICK, IA - Memorial service for a former Algona man, Howard R. Smith, 89, of Lewisville, Texas, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, in the United Methodist Church at Renwick. The Rev. Karen Dearchs officiated. Interment was in Vernon Cemetery at Renwick. The son of Robert and Anna Smith, Howard was born January 11, 1913, at Green Valley, S.D. He served four years as a Navy Seabee in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Howard was married to Ermal L. Swanson-Brayton on July 5, 1947. While they lived at Thor, Renwick and Algona, he worked as a detailed finish carpenter. They moved from Algona to Webster City in 1964 and Howard was employed by Naden Industries until he retired in 1979 and they moved to Mercedes, Texas. Howard enjoyed fishing, hunting and his family.

A resident in a Care Center at Lewisville, Howard died Monday, March 18 (2002), at Lewisville. He is survived by his children, Daryl L. Brayton, Algona; Dean Smith, Woodstock, Ga. and Carol Cervera of Lewisville, Texas. There are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ermal; a granddaughter, great-grandson, his parents, seven brothers and sisters.
