VINCENT, IA - Donald M. Krog, 87, of Vincent, died Thursday, January 12, 2012 at his home in the loving care of his family and Trinity Hospice. The service honoring Donald's life will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at South Enes Lutheran Church in Vincent with the Rev. Susan Stone officiating. Interment will be in Newark Township Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the V.F.W. Post No. 1856, United States Naval Honor Guard and son-in-law Greg Rogers (MSgt-USMC). The visitation is Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services and from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to South Enes Lutheran Church, Vincent Fire Department or Trinity Hospice.

Donald is survived by his wife Clara; his children, Kathie (Greg) Rogers, Mission Viejo, CA; Daniel Krog, Vincent; and Davyd Krog (special friend Mary Binau), Shenandoah; four grandchildren, Bryan and Tyler Lloyd and Sarah and Justin Krog; his siblings, Charlotte Schweppe, Webster City; and Russell (Joan) Krog, Vincent; several nieces and nephews; and special honorary daughters and sons, Solvi (Johnny) Leseth, Norway; Gianfranco Santillo, Brazil; and Laura (Rob) Crowe, Cleveland, OH; and all of their families along with many other family members and friends, including his beloved dog Rocky. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Derek, a sister Violet Krog, a brother Lyle Krog and a brother-in-law, Edwin Schweppe.

Donald M. Krog, the son of Oscar and Eva (Christopher) Krog, was born May 16, 1924 on the family farm near Vincent. He was baptized and confirmed in the South Enes Lutheran Church and attended Newark Township School before graduating from Eagle Grove High School. Donald served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and served on the USS Wakefield. During his service he was stationed in Marseilles, France; Oran, Algeria in North Africa; Exeter, England and London, England. He was a member of the 12th fleet, serving under Admiral Foy. Donald was witness to the opening ceremonies when the United Nations was established. Following his discharge, Donald received training at Aircraft School in Minneapolis. He was employed with Central Auto in Fort Dodge, Spencer and Clear Lake and later he began farming with his brother and more recently with his son Dan. On March 26, 1960, Donald was united in marriage to Clara Traster at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge.

Donald was a lifelong member of South Enes Lutheran Church where he served on the church council; he was honored as the longest continuous member of South Enes Lutheran Church. At one time Don served on the Vincent City Council. Don was an excellent mechanic; he repaired mechanical musical instruments such as player pianos as well as cars and Harley Davidson Motorcycles. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the National and International Music Box Societies as well as the Sons of Norway. He enjoyed dancing and music. Over the many years, Don and Clara cared for many foster children. They enjoyed traveling together both abroad and around the United States. Most importantly, Don treasured time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
