20 June 1913 -- 25 December 1975

Mrs. Howard (Fern) Austin, 62, a longtime Webster City resident, died Thursday morning at the Hamilton County hospital where she had been a patient for one week. She had been in ill health the past two and one-half years. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist church with the Rev. V. Clay Noah, Jr., officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Foster Funeral home until 10 a.m. Saturday when it will be taken to the church.

Fern Elaine Smith, daughter of Claude S. and Marie Christenson Smith was born June 20, 1913 on a farm southeast of Webster City. She was reared and educated in the Webster City community. On Feb. 16, 1941, she was united in marriage to Howard F. Austin, and the couple had always since resided in Webster City where Mr. Austin was employed at Naden Industries. She is survived by her husband; one daughter and three sons, Mrs. Gay (Barbara) Loder of Webster City, Dennis Austin, Iowa City, Donald Austin, Webster City and Roger Austin, Fort Dodge; nine grandsons; five brothers and two sisters, Francis G. Smith and Claude Bill Smith, both of Webster City, Paul Smith, Eagle Grove, Wayne Smith, Culver City, Calif., Ralph Smith, Arizona, Mrs Howard (Dorothy) Hilpipre, Woolstock and Mrs. Arthur (Estaline) Zatloukal of Eagle Grove. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Mrs. Lyle (Pauline) Rapp who died in 1970 and one sister who died in infancy. Mrs. Austin was a member of the First Baptist church and had served as a Sunday school teacher for 15 years.
