27 August 1885 -- 8 June 1973

Claude S. Smith, 87, of Eagle Grove, a former longtime Webster City resident; died Friday at Bethesda General hospital in Fort Dodge where he had been a patient for three days, after having suffered an injury in a fall. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. Arthur Anderson of Eagle Grove officiating, and with burial in Graceland cemetery.

Claude S. Smith, son of Samuel and Catherine Porter Smith, was born Aug 27, 1885, at Dover, Ind. In 1905, the family moved to Iowa locating in Hamilton county. He was united in marriage to Marie Christeson on Nov. 25, 1908, and the couple made their home in Webster City where Mr. Smith was employed at the former Closz Sieve Factory. The later farmed near Kamrar for 13 years. The then returned to Webster City where Mrs. Smith preceded him in death. On Aug. 30, 1941, he was married to Effie L. Lack and the couple made their home in Rockford, Ill moving to Eagle Grove in 1964. Mrs. Smith preceded him in death in 1968, and Mr. Smith continued to make his home in Eagle Grove.

He is survived by five sons and three daughters: Francis G. Smith of Webster City, Mrs. Howard (Fern) Austin, Webster City, Paul Smith of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Estaline (Peg) Kist of Webster City: Mrs. Howard (Dorothy) Hilpipre, Woolstock, Claude C. (Bill) of Webster City, Wayne L. Smith of Culver City, Calif., and Ralph Smith in Texas: one step daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Thelma) Middleton of Eagle Grove: 24 grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. May Johnson of Webster City. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Lyle (Pauline) Rapp in 1970; one step son; one grandson; his parents; two brothers, and one sister.
