FOREST CITY, IA - Ingrid Miles, 93, of Forest City, died Friday (May 9, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Ingrid Miles was born in Stavanger, Norway, on March 30, 1910, the daughter of Ole and Inger (Hodnefjell) Palesen. She was baptized and confirmed, and received her education in Tosta, Norway. When she was 19 years old, in 1929, Ingrid came to America. She arrived by train in Leland and lived with relatives in Thompson while she worked as a hired girl for area farmers. She began cooking at Waldorf Academy during the Depression for $2 a week and room and board.

Ingrid married Leo Nesset in 1933 and to this union four daughters were born. The couple farmed near Forest City until the marriage ended in divorce. In November of 1953, Ingrid married Maynard Miles and the couple made their home in Clarion for many years. They enjoyed traveling to South America and Norway, among other destinations. In 1989, Ingrid returned to Forest City and made her home at Townsquare Apartments, where she treasured time spent with friends playing cards, sharing Bible study together or having coffee. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she was active in Circle and Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Kum Along Club and the Sons of Norway. Ingrid enjoyed cooking and feeding people, extending her warm hospitality to family and friends.

Ingrid is survived by four daughters, Ione Erickson and husband, Robert, of Forest City, Arlene Knapper of Forest City, Elsie Mechem and husband, Dean, of Thompson, and Shirley Hiemstra and husband, Carl, of Huntington, Ind.; a sister, Martha Idsoy of Stavanger, Norway; 20 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kari Olsen; three brothers; five sisters; a grandson, Eric Hanson, and a son-in-law, Goldie Knapper. Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, Iowa.
