29 August 1922 -- 6 September 1995

Kathlyn Claire "Kay" Hale, a longtime East County resident and co-owner of a trucking and construction business, died Wednesday of cancer at a San Diego hospice. She was 73. Mrs. Hale was born in Clarion, Iowa. She was a teacher and secretary for a few years before she married Robert Hale in 1945 in Columbus, Ohio. The couple came to the San Diego area in 1948. "We came out here with the idea that we would be here six months or a year, and we wound up staying all these years," Robert Hale said. "We found some good weather and good people." In 1948, Mrs. Hale and her husband started Bob's Automotive in El Cajon, and the business evolved into Bob's International Trucks. The operation became Hale Enterprises in the 1960s when it took on some construction projects, Robert Hale said. Mrs. Hale remained active in the company's affairs as secretary of the corporation until her illness. Mrs. Hale also volunteered in the office of the Mother Goose Parade, an annual event in the streets of El Cajon that draws thousands of people.

Survivors include her husband, of El Cajon, and sister Jean Xanders, of Columbus, Ohio. A memorial service is planned at 3 p.m. Sept. 22 at the El Cajon Mortuary Chapel.
