Hays, Argyl E. Jr. -
Mr and Mrs Argyl Hays of Afton, formerly of Lenox and Tingley received word Saturday of the death of their son, Chief Warrant Officer Argyl E. Hays Jr., of Ft. Riley, Kan.

Officer Hays was in an H21 Helicopter on a routine night proficiency training flight when a crash occurred, taking all five of the crew to their deaths. The accident could have been caused
by an electrical storm, then in progress.

Last November Hays received the Air Medal for a daring rescue night which he performed earlier in the year in Korea near Seoul. He made four trips to a sand bar in the Hon River to pick up survivors, landing in 30 inches of water with no illumination. He was commended for "unhesitating courageous action in the face of danger."

He leaves a wife and two small sons, his parents, 4 brothers and one sister. His grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Will Hays of Bedford, formerly of Lenox. He is a nephew of Mrs. Verla Ecklin of Lenox, Mrs. Herman Wurster of Clearfield, Mrs. Nelson Ledgerwood of Bedford and Virgil Hays of Diagonal.

Funeral services are to be Friday at Belmont, Iowa, the home of the widow’s family.
