MOLINE, IL — Myrtle I. Bump, 98, formerly of Moline, longtime Director of Nurses at the former Lutheran Hospital, died Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with Dr. Mark E. Gehrke of Faith Lutheran Church, Moline, officiating. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery, Moline. Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or a favorite charity.
The former Myrtle Irene Block was born January 31, 1913, in Renwick, Iowa, the daughter of Claus and Anna (Ramm) Block. She married Jay Bump on July 5, 1939, in Palmyra, Missouri. He died September 12, 1968. She graduated from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing and then received a B.S. in Nursing from Augustana College in 1957. She was a nursing administrator for Lutheran Hospital in Moline for 30 years, retiring as the Director of Nursing Services.
Myrtle was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Moline, serving on the Church Council and Health and Wellness Committee, was president of the Friendship Circle, leader of Naomi Unit, treasurer for Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and was a dedicated supporter of the Parish Nurse Program. Active in the community, she served on United Way Panels, Trinity Medical Center Auxiliary, Western Illinois League for Women, Lutheran Hospital Board of Directors, In Touch Adult Day Care Program Advisory Committee, and delivered meals to homebound individuals for 15 years. Myrtle received many awards, including Lutheran Hospital School for Nurses Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984, Good Samaritan Award in 1986, Red Cross Volunteer Award, Visiting Nurses Association Volunteer of the Year Award, and Modern Woodmens Volunteer of the Year Award, and was a 60-year member of the American Nurses Association.She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Karen Bump of Clermont, Florida, Thomas and Roswitha Bump of Silvis, Illinois, and John L. Bump of Lafayette, California; a grandson and his wife, Jay and Michelle Bump, and their sons, Joshua and Jacob, all of Bettendorf, Iowa; a sister, Eva Steiner of Hannaford, North Dakota; and brothers, Dr. Carroll Block of Thompson, Iowa, and Dr. Kenneth Block of Northwood, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Bump, three brothers, and two sisters.
