May 5, 1838 -- March 4, 1916

Celestine Rohrer, one of the early settlers of Northville Township, south of Somonauk, [Illinois] died suddenly at his home in the latter place early Saturday morning [March 4, 1916] of paralysis. He was up town the day before apparently in the nest of health and those who met him on that day and many friends were shocked at the announcement of his death.

Celestine Rohrer was born in Alsace, Germany May 5, 1838. His father, Joseph Rohrer came with his family to America in 1845 and settled in LaSalle Co., this state. Celestine received such education as the times and place at that time had provided for, and on the farm received his training in work and frugality, and came to be one of the most successful and prosperous farmers of the county. He was married May 5, 1860 to Sophia Kastler, also a native of Alsace. To them were born eleven children, all of whom are living excepting Annie, who died two years ago. She was the wife of John Bruning of Rhodes, IA. Those living are Arthur of Melbourne, IA; Mrs. Ernest Suppes, Mrs. Jake Bruning, Mrs. Charles LaBolle and Henry of Somonauk; Edward, Clarion, Iowa; Charles, Rhodes, IA; Mrs. Arthur Breuer, Sandwich; Albert, Sheridan; and Mrs. Ward Fisher of Philadelphia, PA. He leaves also besides his wife, thirty three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. In 1910 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. At that time the eleven children were all living and were present for the celebration.

About twenty five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Rohrer retired from their farm, moving to Somonauk, which has since been their home. Mr. Rohrer was the last of a family of seven to pass away. He was a man of good habits, highly respected as a citizen and leaves many friends by whom he will be greatly missed. He was a member of Somonauk Lodge No. 646 AF & AM and of the Sandwich Chapter Royal Arch Masons No. 107. The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Congregational Church at Somonauk, conducted by Dr. J. M. Lewis of Sandwich and Rev. N. E. Sinninger. The burial was at Oak Ridge with Masonic services.
