Margaret Mary Katherine (Tanner) Martin, the daughter of Frank E. and Katherine (Wooster) Tanner, Sr. was born April 18, 1924, at Eagle Grove, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1942 and from Iowa State Teachers College in 1943. Margaret taught elementary school in Tama, Iowa Falls and Goldfield. On June 5, 1946, Margaret was united in marriage with Don Martin at the East Side Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove, Iowa. The couple farmed near Eagle Grove until moving to a farm near Hardy in 1951. In 1998, they retired and moved to Eagle Grove.

Margaret was a member of the Ullensvang Lutheran Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church and South Enes Lutheran Church – she was an excellent bible study leader, sharing her knowledge with many over the years. She also served on the Board for Congregational Life to the Western Iowa Synod of ELCA, a 4-H club leader, chairwoman for the Humboldt Extension Council and on the Iowa State Extension Advisory Committee. Margaret and Don enjoyed children and believed in the encouragement of youth.

Margaret passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don Martin; brother, James Tanner; sister, Dorothy Winter. Survivors include her four children: Dick Martin and wife Becky of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Janet Martin and husband Robert Ballou of Monticello, Iowa, Randy Martin of Kure Beach, North Carolina and Jill Stevenson and husband Dan of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren: Kristi and Donald Fleischman of Providence Forge, Virginia, Luke and Jessica Martin of Raleigh, North Carolina, Tim Martin of Raleigh, North Carolina, Sara Ballou of Omaha, Nebraska and Seth Ballou of Monticello, Iowa; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Fleischman of Providence Forge, Virginia and Samuel Martin of Raleigh, North Carolina; two brothers, Frank Tanner, Jr of Eagle Grove, Iowa and Fred and Lucille Tanner of Hartley, Iowa and a sister, Marna Juvenal of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor with Pastor Susan Stone and Rev. Jean M. Sullivan officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. A private family burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be directed to Community Welfare 325 N. Commercial Eagle Grove, Eagle Grove Congregate Meals/Meals on Wheels 310 W. Broadway or a charity of your choice.
