October 24, 1923 -- August 10, 2011

NEW UNDERWOOD, SD - Clarence L. "Jack" Jacobson, 87, New Underwood, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Clarence "Jack" Jacobson was born Oct. 24, 1923 to Clarence and Dorothy Jacobson in Iowa City, Iowa. He grew up and went to school in Belmond, Iowa, where he played saxophone in the high school band, which won first place in a national competition. Jack graduated from Belmond High School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a gunner during World War II on the USS Chester stationed at Pearl Harbor from 1942 to 1945. He was a member of the American Legion. On April 10, 1945, Jack married his sweetheart, Marjorie Wood. They ranched in the Oglala and Scenic areas and then moved to New Underwood where they raised their family. Jack retired from the State Highway Department and built and operated a motel in New Underwood with his wife Marjorie for 16 years. After his retirement he enjoyed fishing and camping and spending time with his family. We will remember him as a loving husband, father and brother.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Jacobson of New Underwood; three sons, Craig (Phyllis Rose) Jacobson of Rapid City, and Kirk (Melody) Jacobson and Bruce (Jamie) Jacobson, all of Gillette, Wyo.; two daughters, Linda Jacobson and Lori (Kevin) Schram, all of Gillette; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; his brother, Edward Jacobson of Fort Dodge, Iowa; his sister, Nancy Henning of Des Moines, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Calvin Wood and his wife Ruby, Rapid City. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Earl Jacobson; brother-in-laws, Leon Wood and Ron Wood; and sister-in-law, Corinne Wood.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Kirk Funeral Home, and then for one hour before services at the church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at New Underwood Community Church, with the Rev. Wes Wileman officiating. Inurnment with military rites by the Sturgis Honor Guard will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to New Underwood Community Church. Kirk Funeral Home.
