Eleanor Mae Arends, 89, of Humboldt, Iowa passed away August 3, 2011 at Long Term Care in the Humboldt Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday August 6, 2011 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt with the Rev. Lynda Bigler officiating. Interment will be at Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Eleanor Mae Nelson, the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Ulvin) Nelson was born April 9, 1922 in Humboldt County. She lived with her parents in the Goldfield area and graduated from Goldfield High School. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and during that time she met Merle Arends and they were united in marriage on Feb. 21, 1943. The couple made their home in the Clear Lake and Humboldt area. Eleanor was an active member of the TTT sorority and enjoyed all kinds of sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and was an active church member.

Eleanor is survived by her four sons; Dale (Paula) Arends, Marc (Linda) Arends, Scott (Anna) Arends and Brad (Kathy) Arends; Grandchildren; Amy (Jim) Wichman, Amanda (Jeremy) Dyvig, Alecia (Chris) Johnson, Abbey (Ryan) Harklau, Ashley Arends, Andrew Arends and ten Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Merle, brothers Curt Nelson, Milt Nelson and Donald Nelson.
