Everett Glen Meeker, 86, of Washington, Iowa died Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a decline in health. Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2011 at the United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin noon Thursday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established to Hospice of Washington County and Camp Courageous.

Everett was born April 13, 1925 in Galt, Iowa the son of Howard Everett and Anna Fern (Simpson) Meeker. He graduated from West High School, Des Moines, Iowa in 1943. Everett was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 until 1947. In 1950, he graduated with High Distinction from the University of Iowa College of Commerce with a BSC degree. He later received his JD Degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in June of 1953 where he was awarded the Order of the Coif, which honors graduates in the top 10 percent of their class. In July of 1953, Everett passed the CPA Exam and was awarded the Elijah Watt Sells certificate of Honorable Mention for outstanding performance on the Uniform CPA Examination.

Everett was united in marriage to Gladys “Lee” Poorbaugh on August 29, 1948 in Farrar, Iowa. Following law school, he worked at the 3M Company in St. Paul, MN from 1953 until 1955 when he moved to Washington to work for Livingston, Day and Meeker Law Firm. Everett then moved to Iowa City where he was a partner in the Clearman, Oehler, Barker and Meeker Law Firm from 1960 until 1966. In 1966, he returned to Washington where he became a partner in the Livingston, Day, Meeker, and Bates Law Firm. Everett was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington and the Washington Noon Kiwanis Club. He was a proud member of the Washington County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and was a fifty year member of the Iowa State Bar Association. His hobbies included boating, flying, traveling, and attending Elderhostel programs.

Everett is survived by his son, Thomas Meeker and wife Susan of Indianapolis, Indiana; daughter, Mary Jane Meeker of Iowa City, Iowa; granddaughter, Emily Ann Meeker of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister Carol Flickinger of Washington, Iowa; brother Robert Meeker of St. Louis, Missouri; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and daughter Susan Elizabeth Meeker.
