Mary Margaret Brock was born in Woolstock, Iowa, June 3, 1917, to Charlie and Annie Brock. She was baptized and confirmed in Lake City, Iowa. As a young girl she was called Margaret or "Midge"; a name she used the remainder of her life. Upon graduation from high school, Margaret worked at dress shops in Spencer and Des Moines, Iowa, and at the Portsmouth Naval Yard in Norfolk, Virginia. On April 24, 1943, she was joined in marriage to Jay Stanley Smolley at the Methodist Church in Key West, Florida. They lived there until Jay's discharge from the U.S. Navy. In 1945, they moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, and became active in farming.

Margaret's three main passions in life were her family, her friends and Clarkfield Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, was president of Ladies Aid, and active in the various women's circles in the church for over thirty years. She also served as president of Yellow Medicine County Homemakers and was an active 4-H club leader.

Margaret passed away at Clarkfield Community Hospital on May 18, 1981, following a lengthy illness. Survivors include her husband Jay; a daughter, Anna Marie of West Des Moines, Iowa; sons, David Warren and John Michael both of Minneapolis, Minnesota; son-in-law, Dale L. Fuhrman; daughters-in-law, Bernice and Cynthia; three grandchildren, Daniel Jay and Nicole Suzann Fuhrman and Samuel Jay Winston Smolley; brothers, Robert Brock of Clarkfield and Charles Brock of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters and three brothers.
