Services will be Friday for John Lewis Currell, a land owner, broker and developer who owned John Currell Realtors in Woodbury [Minnesota]. Lewis suffered a stroke in September and died Sunday at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood. He was 82. Currell opened Currell Realty in downtown St. Paul in the mid 1940's. He sold the company in 1975 and opened a second real estate office, John Currell Realtors, in 1976.

A native of Goldfield, Iowa, Currell graduated in 1933 from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in agricultural education. He was captain of the university's cross-country team from 1931 to 1932 and set several records, including one in 1930 in which he ran four miles in 19 minutes and 47 seconds. The record stood for 27 years. He taught and coached sports, later becoming an assistant county agent in Murray and Hennepin Counties and a county agent in Anoka and Sherburne counties, according to newspaper articles about him in 1962 and 1966, He joined the staff of the Federal Land Bank of St. Paul in the late 30's.

Durrell was a member of the Woodbury Township board for six years, until he resigned as chairman in 1962. Earlier this year, he was recognized as an Honored Member of Who's Who in Real Estate and Development Industries. He was named Farm and Land Broker of America and Minnesota Farm and Land Broker of the Year in 1974, and received the Minnesota Association of Realtors' merit award in 1959. He was president of the St. Paul Board of Realtors in 1962, of the Minnesota Farm and Land Brokers in 1967. He was director of the National Association of Real Estate Boards in 1967 and a member of the ST. Paul Area Association of Realtors from 1965 to 1881.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathryn, four sons, James and Donald of Woodbury, David of Springfield, Colo., and John of Las Vegas; three daughters, Janice Mularoni and Suzanne, both of Woodbury, and Joan of St. Paul; a brohter, Donald of Spokane Wash.; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Wulff Mortuary, 2195 Woodlane Drive, Woodbury and one hour before services at 1 pm. Friday at Woodbury United Methodist Church, 7465 Steepleview Road, Woodbury. MN. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
