Donald Edgar Nelson, the son of Alfred and Clara (Ulvin) Nelson, was born July 5, 1924, in Humboldt County, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth – graduating from Goldfield High School in 1942. Don served in the United States Marine Corps during W.W.II, serving from 1944 until 1946. On January 21, 1951, Donald was united in marriage with Janice Little in Goldfield. The couple resided and farmed in west of Goldfield for 60 years. Donald was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield, the American Legion Post #370 for 67 years, the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years and served as a 4-H leader. He also served on the boards and held offices of the Goldfield Elevator, Goldfield Creamery, AMPI and Federal Land Bank.
Donald passed away at Careage of Clarion on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at the age of 86 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Curtis and Milt Nelson; brother-in-law, Merle Arends and sister-in-law, Ida Nelson. Survivors include his wife, Janice Nelson of Goldfield; three daughters: Debra Stevenson and husband Don of Tempe, AZ, Denise Schick and husband Steven of Cedar Rapids and Diane Culver and husband David of Iowa City; six grandchildren: Ryan Stevenson, Cameron Stevenson, Erin Stevenson, Sally Schick, Polly Schick and Emily Culver and sister, Eleanor Arends of Humboldt.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 11, 2010, 2:00 P.M. at the Goldfield Presbyterian Church with Pastor Sara Hill officiating. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
