BELMOND, IA --- Laura M. Saunders, age 86, of Belmond, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Funeral services for Laura M. Saunders will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 2, at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 116 West Main Street in Belmond. Pastor Donna Buckman will officiate. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation for Laura Saunders will be held from 5-7 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 1, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Memorial maybe made in Laura Saunders' name.

Laura Marie, the daughter of Morse and Marie Leens Hunst was born May 13, 1925, in Fairview, Mont. At a young age Laura's family moved to the Belmond and Alexander areas in Iowa. She attended school in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1943. After high school, Laura taught in country schools for four years. Laura was united in marriage to Lester W. (Bud) Stoffer on March 15, 1947. The couple made their home in Belmond where Laura worked as a housewife and mother. After her children became older, Laura began working outside of the home. She worked for various offices and stores in Belmond, including, Super Value Grocery, U.S.S. Agri, Acco Seed, Dr. Nichols-dentist, North Iowa State Bank, and the telephone company. Bud passed away in 1985. Laura later married Junior Saunders. Laura was an active sales person for Avon and was a Weight Watchers leader for numerous years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, walking and bowling and spending time with family and friends. Laura was active in United Methodist Women in Belmond, and Bethany Reformed and United Church of Christ Congregational Sunday School.

Laura is survived by a daughter, Jill Stoffer and husband, Mark Allen of Belmond; a son, Leland N. Stoffer of Florida; four grandchildren, Chad Schuver and Mary of Belmond; Clint Schuver and special friend, Erin of Belmond; Logan Stoffer of Belmond and Louis Stoffer of Belmond; five great grandchildren, Luke, Cain and Hunter Schuver; Ashton Redfield, Cariin Schuver; step-grandchildren, Danielle Humphrey and Jason of Cedar Rapids: Brandon Allen and Kacie of Belmond; Step Great Grandchildren, Gavin, Avery, Owen and Kayla; sister, Bonnie Steward of Garner; brother and sisters-in-law, Ed and Irene Stoffer of Belmond, Arlene Pals of Alexander, Bea Stoffer of Hampton and numerous other nieces and nephews. Laura is also survived by living members of the Junior Saunders family, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lester (Bud) in 1985; husband, Junior in 1999; son, Lonny in 2005; a sister and her husband, Alice and Jimmy Peterson; brothers-in-law, Kenny Modderman, Jim Steward; nephew, Jeff Modderman; nephew, Terry Stoffer; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jacob and Bobbi Stoffer and Ann and Harold (Curly) Ellefson and Robert Pals. Dugger Funeral Home, Belmond, Iowa.
