September 23, 1890 --- March 13, 1992

Sarah Helen Van Buskirk, 101, of Spencer, died Friday, March 13 at the St. Luke Lutheran Home, Spencer. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 17 at 11 a.m at First English Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Chris Gugel and the Rev. Paul Bussert officiating. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery, Spencer. Casket bearers will be Edward Roskens, John Heien, Darrel Scharnberg, Terry Dandy, Carl Abel and Duane Fisk. The Baumgarten Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of John and Minnie Campbell Logan, she was born Sept. 23, 1890, at Traer. She attended school at Traer and Goldfield and graduated from Goldfield High School. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and taught school for several years. She married Jesse Van Buskirk on Oct. 12, 1910, at Bradgate. Jesse worked for the railroad, so the couple moved often, living in the communities of Goldfield, Bradgate and Fenton in Iowa, in Ceylon, Minn., then in Montgomery and Allendorf, Iowa. She lived at Ottosen for 36 years, and for the last 25 years, she has lived in Spencer. She had been at St. Luke Lutheran Home since 1986. Mrs. Van Buskirk was a member of First English Lutheran Church, Spencer, and had been in the Women's Progressive Club at Ottosen, and served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church at Ottosen. She was the only member at First English Lutheran Church to celebrate her 100th birthday.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, two grandchildren and one son-in-law. She is survived by five daughters and their husbands, Dorothy and Lee Holt of Spencer, Jessie and Clarence Kroeger of Mesa, Ariz., Vera Pressel of Denver, Colo., Mae and Gerald Iversen of Storm Lake, and Fae and Rudolph Berninghaus, of Glencoe, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Lulu McCreary of Mesa, Ariz.
