Berend Catuin [Katuin] Dies at Britt; Rites Thursday

BRITT, IA — Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church for Berend (Ben) Catuin, 84. He died Sunday noon at the Hancock Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 19, 1873, at Bellingwald [Bellingwold], Holland, NL, son of Albert and Talke Pals Catuin. He was married July 12, 1902, to Antje DeGroot at Bellingwald. They came to the United States in 1904 and farmed near Kanawha until 1933, when they moved to a farm southeast of Britt. They retired in 1948. He was active in civic affairs and served on the election board here.

He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Walter (Tillie) Peterson, Britt; Mrs. Ed (Gertie) Abbas, Waverly; Mrs. Maynard (Jennie) Peterson, Farnhamville; Mrs. Peter (Anna) Paulson, Clarion; five sons: Harm, Goodell; Dick, Kanawha; Ben Jr., Fairmont, Minn.; John, Britt; Albert, Ventura; 31 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers. The Rev. Wolff will officiate at the funeral service. There will be a prayer service for the immediate family at the Boughton Funeral Home, Britt, preceding the service at the church. Burial will be in Kanawha.
