December 19, 1923 -- July 17, 1993

Charles E. White, 69, of 1921 Higley Ave. SE, died Saturday in his home after a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Turner Chapel East. Graveside service: 4 p.m. Tuesday in Osceola. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Turner Chapel East and after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Shirley Cline and husband Dan of Osceola and Victoria and husband Dr. Ed Hertko of West Des Moines; one son, Christopher White and wife Kim of O'Fallon, Mo., one grandson, Robert W. Ross of Cedar Rapids, who made his home with Charles and Barbara; one sister, Jeane Keefe of Phoenix, Ariz.; and five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two daughters, one sister and his parents.

Charles was born Dec. 19, 1923, in Portland. He married Barbara J. Savage on Aug. 8, 1943, in Ottumwa. Charles was a teacher at Riceville. He also taught and was administrator at Meservey, Osceola and Cardinal at Eldon. After moving to Cedar Rapids, Charles was employed at Erbs Office Supply and Jim Arenson Chevrolet. After retiring, he worked for the Mt. Vernon Road Hy-Vee food store. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College and did his post-graduate work at the University of Iowa. He was a World War II veteran.

A memorial fund has been established by the family for Hospice of Mercy and Midwest Diabetes Foundation. The Rev. Gary Nims of St Paul's United Methodist Church will officiate.
