Kenneth H. Marvel, 47, widely known sales pavilion operator and one of the midwest's leading feeder cattle specialists, died at 1:55 a.m. today, Thursday, March 22, 1951 at the Colonial hospital, Rochester, Minn., where he had been a patient the past 35 days. Cause of his death was lymphal sarcoma. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Congregational church in Webster City with the Rev. S. T. Lenters officiating and with burial on the family lot in Graceland cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from noon Saturday until 2 p.m. Foster's funeral home is in charge.
Kenneth Harold Marvel, son of Charles and Sarah Marvel, was born April 6, 1903 in Waynesville, Ill. In 1907 he moved with his parents to Iowa, locating at Webster City. He was educated in the Webster City schools, being graduated with the class of 1921. He was united in marriage June 6, 1921 to Miss Dorothy Gilmore. Mr. and Mrs. Marvel made their home at Grand Junction, Colo., until 1922, at which time they returned to Iowa, locating on the Marvel farm six miles north of Blairsburg in Wright county. The late Col. C. W. Marvel erected the first Marvel Sales barn, 301 Second street, in 1933, in partnership with Bascum Huddlestun. When the partnership was dissolved in 1934, Kenneth Marvel joined his father in the business and moved to Webster City from near Blairsburg in 1935. Kenneth and Colonel Marvel then formulated plans for the construction of the present sale pavilion on west Second street which was completed in the fall of 1941. The colonel's death however, came unexpectedly in April of the same year. In 1945 Kenneth's son, Jack, returned from the service and joined his father in the business.
He was past president and longtime director of the Auction Sales Pavilion Operators of Iowa. He was one of the pioneers in the feeder cattle business in the state of Iowa, and was one of the founders of the 4-H club foundation and was very active in 4-H and youth work. He was a director of the First State bank and member of the Elks lodge.
Mr. Marvel is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter, John W. (Jack) Marvel of this city and Mrs. Eugene (Marcella Peggy) Perkins of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, Judith, John and James Marvel and Kenneth Marvel Perkins; three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Harold (Gladys) Mitchell of Webster City, Mrs. Bradford (Louise) Stannerson of Silver Springs, Md., Miss Lorene Marvel of St. Cloud, Minn., and Ralph Marvel of San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by one son, Donald, who died in 1932 and also his parents.
