Craig E. Hackbarth, 64, died April 10, 2011 at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 14 at Phillips Funeral Chapel in Vinton with Rev. John Karrick officiating. A private committal service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Craig Hackbarth Scholarship Fund.
Craig was born January 29, 1947 at Hampton to Milton E. and Anne P. (Keepf) Hackbarth. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School and then attended mechanics school in Des Moines. He served in the Army National Guard from 1967 to 1971. Craig farmed in the Iowa Falls area before beginning his 42-year career with Fareway Stores. He was manager of the Fareway (Fastco) Store in Belmond for a time. He became manager of the Vinton Fareway in 1989 and worked until his retirement on July 18, 2009. Craig married Judy K. Hinton. On February 8, 1992 he was united in marriage to Brenda Freese at Vinton. Craig was a member of the Vinton Country Club, the Vinton Kiwanis Club, and the Izaak Walton League.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Darreld. Survivors include his wife Brenda; daughter Robin (Patrick) Dorr of Belmond; son William Hackbarth of Boone; grandchildren Skylar (special friend Kyle), Nicholas and Kassidy Dorr; sister Sharon Anderson of Independence; brother James (Judy) of Roseville, CA; the Freese family; and his Fareway family.

In addition to his wife, Brenda, he is survived by his daughter, Robin (Patrick) Dorr of Belmond, and his son, William (Bill) Hackbarth of Boone; his grandchildren, Skylar and her special friend, Kyle, Nicholas and Kassidy Dorr; his sister, Sharon Anderson of Independence; and his brother, James "Jim" (Judy) of Roseville, CA; the Freese family; a number of nieces and nephews; and his Fareway family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Darreld.
