Eagle Grove woman dies in house fire
No cause of death reported yetBy SANDY MICKELSON, Messenger staff writer
EAGLE GROVE - A 50-year-old Eagle Grove woman died in a house fire early Sunday morning. The body of Kay Jessen was taken by Foust Funeral Home to the office of the state medical examiner in Ankeny for an autopsy, said Eagle Grove Fire Chief Gary Lalor. No cause of death has been released. The fire remains under investigation by the state fire marshal. Lalor said the fire was reported at 6:44 a.m. by a neighbor to the west of Jessen's small, one-bedroom house on Southeast Sixth Street. He said 17 firefighters responded, with aid from the Eagle Grove Police Department and the Eagle Grove ambulance service.
"My entry team had the actual fire under control in probably 10 minutes," Lalor said. "I have a very well-trained group of volunteers." Firefighters were on the scene until noon. "I would consider the house a total loss," Lalor said. "When they paged this, they paged it as possibly one occupant in the house." Because of this, Lalor said he contacted the fire marshal immediately after realizing there had been a death. "We actually had two representatives from the state fire marshal's office today. They were here probably within three hours of us being paged."
Jessen worked at the Rotary Ann Home in Eagle Grove. The administrator there declined to comment on the fatal fire. There were no injuries to firefighters, and there were no pets in the house, Lalor added. Gary Lalor has been a part of the Volunteer Fire Department in Eagle Grove for more than 40 years and has been chief since 1993. "In a small town like this," he said, "your chances of knowing the people are extremely good, and that just adds to the difficulty."
